Having problems installing your Samsung CLP-315W? Scratching your head after trying to read through the user guide? Wondering where to find the MAC address of your CLP-315W? Can’t connect to your network after several attempts?
If your setup is similar to mine – a Wi-Fi infrastructure mode/access point network (I’m using the Linksys WRT160N router which is set to Wireless-G only) with static IPs and PCs running 32-bit Vista – you may find this post useful.
Samsung’s Color Laser User’s Guide for their CLP-310 series is one of the worst manuals I’ve encountered. Here is an example of the fine writing and editing therein:
Before starting wireless parameter configuration, make sure cable connection status. (Page 25, online release date of September 25, 2009)
Marvelous.
To add your CLP-315W to your wireless network, you will need:
- Your CLP-315W, powered up with paper in the tray
- A PC which can connect to the Internet and which is on the same network you wish to add your printer to
- A router whose settings you know or can obtain which is the access point for the network you wish to add your printer to
- An Ethernet cable with which you will connect your CLP-315W to the router (a short Ethernet crossover cable is supplied with the CLP-315W, but I used a long, standard Ethernet cable since my router and printer are quite far apart)
Then follow these steps:
Step 1. Connect the CLP-315W to your router via an Ethernet cable.
Step 2. Print the Network Configuration Report and Configuration Report for the CLP-315W. To print both reports, in Ready mode (steady green light), hold the Stop button down for at least 5 seconds.
The Network Configuration Report produced shows current network-related information and the status of your CLP-315W, including its MAC address, current IP address, and wireless network settings. The Configuration Report displays other useful data about the printer, including the serial number, RAM size, and toner levels. The Network Configuration Report may come in handy during the installation process.
Step 3. Visit the Samsung site and download the latest driver. Today, the support page is here. About a third of the way down the page, enter CLP-315W in the Enter model number or keywords box. On the Support for CLP-315W page, click on Driver on the Downloads tab. Download the first printer driver – version 3.04.80:43, release date September 25, 2009. Save it to a location you will easily remember.
Step 4. Install the driver you downloaded in Step 3. Browse to the location where you saved the driver. Then double-click on the driver file name
(CLP-310_Print_32bit).
You should now see the following screen:
It’s OK to accept the default location. Click Next.
Now you should see this screen:
Choose your language and then click Next.
You should now see this screen:
As shown above, select the second radio button labeled Typical installation for a network printer. Click Next.
A search for your printer is then performed. This screen is then displayed:
In this example, 192.168.1.0 is the current IP address of the CLP-315W. This address should correspond to the IP address listed in the Network Configuration Report you printed in Step 2.
In my situation, I set static IP addresses, and this IP address doesn’t fall within my allowed range. To change the IP address, I had to select the radio button to the left of the printer information and click Set IP Address in the lower left-hand corner.
A new screen will appear. Again click the radio button for the CLP-315W. You should then see something similar to this:
The area circled above in red is the location in which you should enter the IP address you want your CLP-315W to have. Then click the Configure button. A pop-up window will appear to tell you whether the configuration was successful. After you have successfully configured the TCP/IP Port, click Next.
You will then see this screen:
Then, finally, this screen will appear:
Click Finish.
The installation of the Samsung CLP-315W printer driver is now complete.
Step 5. Use Samsung’s SyncThru Web Service to configure the printer for your wireless network. The SyncThru Web Service is installed automatically when you install the driver software. To access it, open a browser window (using IE, Firefox, Chrome, etc.). In the address bar, enter the IP address you set for your CLP-315W in Step 4.
In the example below, the CLP-315W IP address is 192.168.1.203.
Click on the Network Settings tab to get to the wireless settings you will need to change in order to add the CLP-315W to your network. Make sure the SSID, gateway, wireless security, and other settings are correct (check your router for this information, if necessary).
Step 6. Unplug the Ethernet cable which is connecting the printer to the router. After about 20 seconds or so, the blue LED on the top of the printer should be illuminated. If it is, your printer is ready to use wirelessly.
Note: If you have additional PCs on your network which will be using the CLP-315W, repeat Step 3 and Step 4 for each PC. You won’t have to set the IP since you already did it the first time through.
You are an absolute gift from god!!! I have had my printer for nearly a year now and have attempted the seemingly black art witchcraft in order to connect it wirelessly to my home network with no success whatsoever. The guide is as you say completely useless and I am no technophobe!
Thank you so much!
This was really useful. Helped me where samsung failed. Here’s to clear english. thx
Jon-Cameron and David, glad you found the post helpful!
Thanks for commenting.
Thanks!
Jesus Christ, why didn’t I think of that … disconnect Ethernet to activate wireless…
Could they have made it any more obscure.
Thank you for clearing up 4 hours of frustrations.
Excellent piece of work, thank you very much
One thing I would like to add though – I went through your steps thoroughly but when I got to the point where you add the printer to the network through SyncThru, it wouldn’t find my wireless network but found everyone else and his dog’s network, no problem
After searching around the net, I established that SyncThru will not pick up any networks with a space in the name
For example my network was in this format
xxxx xxxx and I changed it to
xxxxxxxx
and SyncThru found and connected to the network immediately
Thanks again for your great walkthrough
Thanks a lot for excellent instruction. Tried for a very long time even with Samsung support but nothing worked. With your instruction it was a five minute task
Great step by step!!!
I have followed your procedure and have a problem
>>> I would so appreciate a reply <<<<<
what I see on the printer
The blue light is OFF
the green light is ON
Does this mean the wireless is broke?
It prints fine when
connected to pc usb
after setting up static ip address
Thanks,
Spatial
my cable connection is really bad, and i have to reset (in plug/plug in) the cable and router once a day. each time this happens, it seems like i have to reinstall the wireless printer again.. anyone know if this is true? very annoying, since i don’t want to install the printer every time i need to print something.
Wow. Much thanks. Worked like a charm.
Thank you so much for this! I almost quit on trying to install it on wireless.
I have a question,
if I am using a wireless (sprint hotspot) on my computer, can I still use this printer?
I could hook up my router but can I do it w/o (I do have a ethernet cord can I hook it up in the back of the computer to printer and do the same??
thanks for any help…
john
Thank you so much! I have had the wireless problem for 4 months and resorted to just using the USB connection until I came across this article. Now i have the magical blue light and my printer is back where it belongs!

I have been in IT for almost 40 years, from patch panel card sorter days, through mainframes till now. One thing that has always frustrated me and wasted time is non-intuitive documentation. With the trend away from paper printed doc. – the expendiency of help screens as doc. – in a word – suck.
Thank you for renewing my faith in intelligent, practical, common sense, openly shared information that is direct, to the point, and unambiguous.

I have been described as a luddite when it comes to matters of a technical nature. Your post has been brilliant and now connected.
Thank you.
muchas gracias, saludos.
Hi there, This is brilliant – many thanks. Now the bad news – about 3 weeks after doing this, the printer just dropped off the network again. Last time this happened I reinstalled followed these instructions and hey preto. But how do I stop it from ever dropping off again?
Hi, I successfully connected my CLP 315 to my wireless network. I moved house and changed my ISP with a new router. I tried connecting to my new wireless network but unable to because my old network SSID (network name) is still stuck with the printer. I’ve restarted the router and the printer many times with and without the ethernet cable in it but to no avail. I’ve changed my network name and reset my router but still no. What can I do?
i couldn’t figure this printer out for more than 2 years! Many many thanks!!!
Thank you so much. Your instructions were so easy to follow and understand. Like many others I found it impossible to follow the ‘official’ manual. Although everything seems to be working OK when I finished the installation I received the “program may not have installed properly” message. I am running a 64 bit Win 7 Asus K72F notebook. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks once again for restoring my sanity.
Excellent post. Worked like a champ, obviously better than their manual. Thanks, need to bookmark this. Excellent!
Many thanks for your straightforward,, step-by-step advice. Worked through it methodically and got 2 no. pcs printing wirelessly. Brilliant. Thankyou.
Hi,
I had no problem in the past with wifi connection of this printer to my network. now I changed to new router/modem and unfortunately I’m not able to use the printer via wifi.
the blue light is always on for a while and that off… and the printer is not connected? can the problem be in security setings of the network?
I got mine connected, easy-peasy; issue i’m having is it keeps going offline and there’s’ no mention of ‘offline’ in the manual or the samsung website for this laser printer. i’ve even gone to samsung’s community boards and see the problem listed multiple times and alas, no answer or solution 😦
thanks for all the advice – have had to refer back to it several times,as each time a laptop is disconnected we have to redo from the beginning. Does work every time though, so great.
Excellent, concise, helpful. Thanks!
Thanks so much for these instructions and comments. I was on the phone with Samsung for 35 mins and they could not help me. Crazy. Working wireless with my blue light.
Hello! I just wish to give you a huge thumbs
up for the excellent information you’ve got here on this post. I will be coming back to your web site for more soon.
This one in English is easier than the one in Dutch from Samsung. Within 15 minutes it worked!! Thanks very much.
What a great article – Thank You. I spent a couple of hours tonight getting nowhere with setting up my sammy laser on my wireless network for other machines in the house. Then I came accross your article and sorted it in 5 minutes. Thanks again for taking the trouble – Sammy should get their act together and fix the instructions in the box.
Didn’t work for me on my own WLAN, for some reason the printer just won’t connect to it in Infrastructure mode (only Ad hoc, but can’t print then). However our kind neighbor allows us to use his, and, strangely enough, it connects and prints correctly via that. Mine is a Fritz Box.
You and your information are a true blessing. Although I have loved the printer since I got it – nearly 2 years ago, I could only use it on my main PC via wired connection. My frustration with Samsung’s instructions left me unhappy – to say the least. After I ran across your excellent directions, I had 3 computers talking to the laser printer in a half an hour. Thank you so much.
Does it have to be plugged into the router permanently or once you set it up, can you unnconnect it from the router and it will work wirelessly?
You’ve probably worked it out by now, but it doesn’t have to remain plugged to router, once blue light shows wifi is activated and you can disconnect and it will work.
Your instructions are still helping people in Feb 2014. Many thanks.
thank you for showing the complete setup. i had only been able to partially set up before finding your site. After going to printers, clicking on my printer, then clicking on “network settings” i clicked on the setup wizard and was able to write in router password in order for the printer to communicate with the router wirelessly.
I can say thank you so much
Very useful. Adapted this for a mac and it worked wonderfully. thank you.
Your instructions are still helping people in _January 2016_. Many thanks
I can’t thank you enough for the instruction. I used the samsung universal driver, but same idea, and I finally made it work following your instruction. AWESOME job. Thank you SOOOOOOO MUCH!
Thanks a million ! Got the printer working in LAN and wireless modes in first shot!
Help, Thank you for your posting of this installation instructions.. I cannot get the blue WiFi led to come on… I follow the steps but when the network cable is unplugged …I lose the connection for wired and never get WIRELESS.
Where do I enter the security code for my network for this printer?
Hi, Ronald.
You can use Samsung’s SyncThru Web Service to enter your network settings (see Step 5).
syncthru web service does not show SSID or any other wireless settings under “Network Settings”, what can be the problem?
I hav the same issue: no Wireless tab in the syncthru web service. ;-(
LOL, eight years after… I got the wireless settings tab to magically appear ( and the blue light to turn on ) by rebooting the printer, both by pulling and reinserting the plug, and then turning the power switch off and on again. THEN rebooting the pc. Blue light still goes off ( and wireless tab disappears from Sync Thru ) when I disconnect the ethernet cable. winning!
And the wireless network SSID is “airportthru” and the type is “adhoc”, neither of which match my infrastructure network with a different SSID. If I change the printer’s network SSID to match my wifi SSID, and change type to “infrastructure” the blue light goes off and the printer is unreachable when the ethernet cable is removed.
Steve, would it be OK for me to email you to see if we can solve the problem? I have your email address via WordPress.
Please feel free to contact me. I’m impressed that you are still actively watching this post after, what, 10 years?! Thanks for your offer of help.
thanks for sharing your information with us.your information solved my problem which i was really worried about
Where do I find software to my laserprinter …. Samsung CLP-315W
I have lost my driver-CD
Claus, it looks like HP is managing that information now:
